Mindrending Gas Trap
When a creature steps within 10 feet of this trap’s magical sensor psychic energies reach out to play tricks upon its mind.
Delicate Sensor. Creatures that succeed on a Stealth check to move carefully do not activate the trap.
Spell Solve. Dispel magic (or any other effect that negates magic) and a spellcasting ability check deactivates the trap’s magic sensor for 1 hour. A critical on the spellcasting ability check results in a critical success.
Trap. This trap can be detected by an Investigation check made with disadvantage to notice the magical sensor near the ceiling. If the trap is not detected, it automatically triggers a critical failure.
Carefully twisting the metal strands off with a thieves’ tools check prevents the trap from activating. Crawling with an Acrobatics check made with advantage also allows a creature to pass by without activating the trap.
Critical Failure: Mindrending gas immediately fills the area within a 30-foot radius and spreads outward 10 feet at the end of every round for 1 minute. When a creature starts its turn in the gas or first enters into the gas on a turn, it makes a Wisdom saving throw , gaining a short-term mental stress effect on a failed save. On a failure by 5 or more, the creature also gains a long-term mental stress effect.
Failure: As a critical failure, but instead the gas immediately fills the area within a 15-foot radius and spreads outward 5 feet at the end of every round for 1d4+1 rounds.
Success: The adventurers avoid or disarm the trap.
Critical Success: The adventurers avoid or disarm the trap but have the option to leave the trap active for someone else to deal with.
