Tourist Season

It’s that time of year when the city experiences a large influx of tourists—either because of a large festival, a period of religious pilgrimage, or some other yearly phenomenon. It’s good business for local inns and taverns, but an inconvenience for everyone else.

Overcrowded. The city’s infrastructure is clearly not made for this volume of people. Streets are crowded, restaurants have impossible wait times, and businesses are overrun. The entire area is considered to be difficult terrain, and proprietors have artificially inflated prices (often from 25–50%) on even basic goods and services to capitalize on the crowds.

Possible Solutions

A group check is required to navigate the crowd. Each adventurer can choose from the following:

  • Acrobatics to either physically slip through the crowds or to travel along rooftops.
  • Athletics or Intimidation to clear the way, either physically or psychologically.
  • Deception to convince a large swath of people that something important or interesting lies in another direction.
  • History, Culture, or Religion (as determined by the Narrator) to gain insight on the event and how to avoid the worst of the crowds.

POTENTIAL OUTCOMES

Critical Failure. The adventurers each suffer a level of strife from dealing with the incessant crowds.

Failure. Tourists are everywhere, and they inexplicably walk so slowly. It takes the adventurers twice as long to navigate around the city, making it harder to keep appointments or arrive at businesses before they close or reach capacity (potentially including respectable inns, preventing them from gaining the benefits of a haven).

Success. The adventurers manage to avoid the worst of the crowds. Their movement throughout the city is not impeded by difficult terrain.

Critical Success. As a success, but the adventurers also overhear something of significance or run into an important person as a result. Roll on the Boons and Discoveries table.
