Communicator. A mayday can eavesdrop on and perfectly replicate any electronic communication, but can’t modify its message or create original communications.

False Appearance. While the mayday is motionless, it is indistinguishable from an inanimate object such as a space vessel.

Sticky. A creature or object that touches the mayday is stuck to the mayday. A creature or vessel can use an action to make a DC 24 Strength check, freeing itself on a success. The effect also ends when the mayday chooses to end it or when the mayday dies.

ACTIONS

Multiattack. The mayday makes a pseudopod attack and a bite attack.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, melee range, one target stuck to the mayday. Hit: 46 (4d20 + 4) piercing damage.

Pseudopod. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, range short, one target not stuck to the mayday. Hit: 22 (4d8 + 4) bludgeoning damage, and the target is subjected to the mayday’s Sticky trait and pulled to melee range.

BONUS ACTIONS

Shapeshift. The mayday changes its form to resemble an object of its approximate size that it has seen before, such as a starship, space debris, or asteroid, or changes into its true form, which is a silvery blob. Objects it is carrying or stuck to are not transformed. While shapeshifted, its statistics are unchanged. It reverts to its true form if it dies.

Legends and Lore

With a Medicine or Nature check, characters can learn the following:

DC 10 Sometimes, what appears to be a starship is actually a shapechanging, shipdevouring monster called a mayday.

DC 15 Maydays can transmit distress calls exactly as they have heard them, but they can’t make up new ones or engage in conversation.

Description

A starship picks up a garbled distress call. Following the call, it approaches a seemingly disabled freighter. Suddenly, the freighter extends long, silvery tendrils, which grapple the starship and reel it towards the fanged mouth that has suddenly appeared on the freighter’s prow…

Behavior

1 Precious metal-rich asteroid

2 Azimuth science vessel

3 Orca warship

4 Nebula mining vessel

Signs

1 Space wreckage (of the same type of ship as the mayday’s disguise)

2 Directional distress beacon with no words

3 Repeating voice distress call: “Mayday! Approaching disabled vessel - (static) - reach out - (static) caught!”

4 Repeating text warning message: “HOSTILE SPACE FAUNA IN SYSTEM, DO NOT APPROACH”

Encounters

Mindspore mushrooms most often flourish in dank swamps, but can be found wherever victims of their spores have died.

Monster Type Description

Aberrations are unnatural beings that don’t belong to this plane of existence. Many aberrations are telepathic and use a mental power known as psionic power instead of magic. An aboleth is an aberration.
